State League Training

We will have training again this week, same time. We would like to be able to split into teams and train as such, but this depends entirely on how many people attend training.

Also, I need some details (address, phone, date of birth) from the following people. Please ensure I get it from you either before then, or at the training:

  • Barlow Matt
  • Barron Nick
  • Denison-Smith Chris
  • Dillon Micheal
  • Gannon Cassandra
  • Horan Liam
  • Macklin Jack
  • Maguire Colm
  • McFarlane Brylee
  • Olding Greg
  • Sadler Will

I will also have a list of all players and the team(s) they have been allocated to. Please check them. Most people appear in more than one team. This does not necessarily indicate which of those teams you will play in - that will be up to the coach for the highest level team to decide according to you current performance.

There will be some movement between teams of players as the season progresses - if you are listed in a mixed team and you want to play in the Mens/Womens team, speak to the coach and discuss your performance with them. Often attitude towards achievement is as important as skill level.

We, as a region, are aiming to perform at the best of our ability. However, if it is not enjoyable to some extent, we are not really hitting some of the targets. Have a good time, but do your best.

    [God, this sounds so corny!]

    City Touch Postponed

City Touch games for tonight have been postponed until next week.

    New Coaches!

Firstly, a big congratulations to Nicole Treleaven, Brice Mitchell, Tessa Dignam & Justin Timms, who completed their Level 1 Coaching Course yesterday afternoon. I look forward to the continued involvement of them with Scorps as players and coaches.

Secondly, for those that don't yet know, the following coaching positions have been decided for the Winter 2004 State League season (Now that they are all qualified, I can announce them!):

If anyone is interested in fulfilling an assistant role, or doing some team management, please email Matt or call 0422 11 86 11.

    Ron Kerr, regional co-ordinator resigns.

A big thank-you to Ron Kerr, who has done a great job as regional co-ordinator over the past few seasons.

For those who don't know Ron that well, he has suffered from severe chronic back pain for some time, and the condition has worsened to the state that he is unable to continue doing that job. It is a largely thankless job, but an important one.

Brice, Matt McKenzie-Smith and I are likely to take on much of the co-ordination roles in the short term, but if anyone is keen to become involved at an administrative level, then please contact us. The sooner the better - you can be involved to a small extent to begin with, and we will train you up to fulfil all requirements over the next months.

    City Touch Round 7

A bit of a scare this week - only 2-1 up at half time!

We probably needed this wake-up call. Roosters are a good team - they do have several of our past (and current) state league players, and we really underestimated them. Scoring first, and so quickly and easily probably made us think we would win quite comfortably, but it wasn't the case.

Actually, checking the score shows a 6-2 victory, which in normal circumstances is a comfortable win!

I missed a fair chunk of the second half due to administration requirements for state league (see associated posts on this site), but I would like to see us return to our 'better' form, including having one-for-one subs again sometime soon.

Don't forget State League training this Sunday at 12:30.

    Young Male Players Urgently Required!

At the current point in time, there are no nominated male players eligible to play in the Mixed Junior State League competition. We need to get some players on our lists by this weekend, else we will not be able to enter a team.

Since we have about 28 girls on our list (open & juniors), this will mean that some players will miss out on some games.

I don't want this to happen! Contact me with some boys names!

    Where is Lucy Alver?

Another fine win, with Scorps winning 15-0 over some other team. However, a referee error resulted in the score being recorded as 14-1. We don't mind, even though we don't like the opposition (some of whom haven't paid me for the last season, when they played in my team! - Not that I hold grudges, much).

The level of our play was far above the opposition, but I sometimes feel like we are getting a bit lazy - we'll meet at 6pm next week before a 6:15 game (please be ready to warm up at 6, even if that means getting there earlier!) and go through some stuff in preparation. We are playing Ellen's team, and they have got some girls who know how to play touch.

Justine returned to the team this week, a welcome addition. She is going to continue to play - I don't think we are going to have too many, since Mel D is away for about 6 weeks, and other people drop in and out when they choose, like Lucy A.

Fees are coming in well, with only two players not having paid anything - but since one of these is Jussy, we'll let her off. (The other one, well, Amy, that's you!) Luckily, she helped out with the BBQ (which raised about $50 to General Scorps revenue - if Brice hadn't helped out, I might have co-opted the money to CSTA Women's, but Scorps State League needs all the money it can get.) A Big Thankyou (tm) to Wina, Dons Em & Lars who also helped out (probably more than Amy, in reality, although she did wash up!).

We might have more BBQs in the future.

Another State League training/trial will be held this Sunday, although I understand most of the 18s girls will be away. Make sure you catch up with me or Ron and sign the paperwork!

    City Touch Round 5

Another round, another clean sheet. A fantastic defensive effort by the 8 players present kept WDTA McLeod's daughters inside their half for all but about 5 drives.

    Comment of the game:

"They're scared of me! I love it!" - Wina

A high scoring first half gave us an unbeatable lead: 6 - 0 at half time, and then a couple more unanswered touchdowns in the second half.

We still have things we can improve - keeping our attacking wingers wide at all times will give us more scoring opportunities, and moving the defenders about on the line will create holes. Our defence was great, but shut-downs need to come quicker (and we need to be more confident when shooting). A bit more structure in terms of both attack and defence will help us out come August, and State League.

I'm not going to say much more, other than keep bringing money, and don't forget the State League Trials this Sunday - at midday.
